Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) for COVID-19-Associated Refractory Hypoxemia in the Postpartum Period

We report a 30-year-old woman at 35 weeks' gestation who developed rapidly worsening respiratory distress due to (COVID-19) disease. She underwent emergent intubation, followed by an emergency cesarean section. The patient was placed on ECMO due to findings of acute right ventricular systolic dysfunction and refractory hypoxemia.

A Guide for Improving Wellness in Surgical Education

This contemporary selective review is designed primarily for surgical education leaders who are seeking ways to improve wellness for their learners, colleagues, and themselves. A select group of conceptual frameworks briefly described are largely drawn from an extensive body of scholarship on workplace wellness from outside of medicine. This is followed by some categories of programs that a surgical education leader could implement with the reasonable expectation of a positive impact. This article is intended for surgical educators responsible for developing wellness interventions for surgical faculty and learners.

Specific learning objectives include:

Describe concepts relevant to work-place associated wellness
Practically implement some wellness programs for surgical faculty residents and medical students
Articulate the importance of engaging with the target groups in developing wellness interventions.
